A Complex Process
The process began with a real-world sheep, standing still in a capture studio, surrounded by hundreds of cameras. This photogrammetry technique provided a base model, but it was just the beginning. The team had to manually refine and add intricate details, from the wool's texture to the facial features, ensuring each sheep had its own unique character.
"We have artists trying to make sense of all the internal bits and pieces, the volumes of each muscle group and the space between the skin and the muscles," explains Ray Leung, joint head of the model texture team. This attention to detail extended to the wool, with a team visiting the Royal Melbourne Show to collect samples and understand the construction of real sheep's wool.
The Power of Performance
While the external details were crucial, it was the performance that truly brought the sheep to life. The animation team studied the movements and behaviors of real sheep, ensuring their digital counterparts moved and acted believably.
"The eyes are everything for these performances," Simmonds emphasizes. By focusing on the eyes and getting the mouth sync just right, the team created a believable and engaging performance.
A Collaborative Effort
The creation of The Sheep Detectives was a truly international and collaborative effort, with offices in London, Montreal, Mumbai, and Melbourne all playing a role. Despite the complexity of managing such a large project, the process went smoothly, according to Lara Hopkins, boss of Framestore's Australian branch.
"I think that was because there was real enjoyment and passion for the creatures and characters we were creating," she says. This passion and dedication are evident in the final product, a testament to the hard work and artistry of the entire team.
